How to Create and Use Templates in Cubase to Save Time

Starting every music production or mixing session from a completely blank project is one of the easiest ways to kill your creative momentum. Setting up the same vocal tracks, routing group buses, loading reference tracks, and inserting your favorite stock EQs over and over eats up valuable studio time.

Building a custom Cubase project template allows you to bypass the repetitive technical setup and jump straight into creating or mixing within seconds.

Step 1: Set Up Your Audio Tracks, Groups, and Routing

Before saving a template, map out your typical project routing so you never have to route buses manually again:

• Audio Channels: Create dedicated tracks for Drums (Kick, Snare, Hi-Hats), Bass, Guitars/Synths, and Vocals (Lead, Doubles, Ad-libs).
• Group Buses: Route individual instrument tracks into sub-mix groups (e.g., all drum tracks to a Drums Bus, all vocals to a Vocal Group Bus).
• Mix Bus / Master Output: Add your default metering tools (like SuperVision) on the stereo master output.

Step 2: Build Your FX Send Channels

Pre-configure your spatial effects on dedicated FX Channels rather than creating new aux tracks every session:

• Short Reverb: A plate or room reverb for subtle space and cohesion.
• Long Reverb: A lush hall or ambient reverb for trailing pads and vocal throws.
• Synced Delays: Set up a 1/4 note delay and an 1/8 note stereo delay with high-pass and low-pass filters applied to keep your mix clean.

Step 3: Color-Code and Name Your Workspace

Visual organization drastically speeds up navigation in large Cubase arrangements:

• Assign consistent color themes (e.g., Red for Drums, Blue for Bass, Yellow for Lead Vocals, Green for FX Channels).
• Set up Folder Tracks for each group (Drums Folder, Vocals Folder) to keep your project window clean and collapsible with a single click.

Step 4: Save the Project as a Reusable Template

Once your routing, tracks, colors, and FX sends are cleanly configured without any actual audio files loaded:

1. Click File in the top menu bar.
2. Select Save as Template…
3. Choose an existing category (such as Production or Mixing) or create a custom category name.
4. Enter a clear name for your template (e.g., Hip-Hop Mix Template v1 or Tracking Template) and click OK.

The next time you open the Steinberg Hub, your custom template will be ready to launch with all routing and settings preserved.
